Al-Midan

Al-Midan is a historic and densely populated municipality in southern Damascus with a population of approximately 177,456, making it one of the largest districts by population. The name means “the field” or “the square,” reflecting its origins as an open area south of the old city walls.

Al-Midan is famous throughout Damascus for its food street, where traditional eateries serve sfiha, fatteh, kebab, and sweets. The district has a strong working-class identity and a rich cultural heritage, with historic mosques, old houses, and a vibrant street life that makes it one of the city’s most characterful neighbourhoods.
